My Story
I've been fascinated by cars since I was 12 when I helped my uncle fix his 50 Merc
flathead. The car was kept behind the barn because it didn't run. As a summer project
we decided to take the engine apart and rebuild it. I put in a lot of time on that car but by
the end of the summer the engine was back together and it actually ran. He ended up
selling the car but I was hooked. After that summer I would help the older kids in my
neighborhood work on their cars so I could learn everything I could.
Once I obtained my license my friends and I started building and racing anything we could
get our hands on. We eventually made it to H-Stock before the old marriage,
family, house, don't have any money thing happened.
After I was married I stayed away from the track and the cars and any thing related
because I couldn't just watch and not participate. I sold everything and started
raising a family and building a career for the next 20 years.
Then it happened. It was in May 1995 when I first saw the Impala. I was looking out
the window of my third floor office in NY when I spotted this all black, absolutely HOT
looking sedan. It had 5 spoke wheels, big tires and no chrome. I couldn't tell what it was, I
thought somebody had just customized his family sedan. Then several weeks later
as I was passing a Chevy dealer on my way to visit a customer I spot
the IMPALA right in
front. I drove in, went inside and got all the details and went on to see my customer.
Well for the rest of the day I'm thinking about this car. When I got home that night I put my
plan together. My current lease would be over in December (7 long months to wait), the
Impala has four doors (Req'd for the Co. car), she gets 26 mi per gal (Co. requires 30. Well
I have to work on that) and the payments fit into the car allowance. Now I just have to
wait until December.
December finally arrives and I run to the dealer and negotiate my deal, sign on
the dotted line, let the salesman do his orientation and head for the nearest open road.
After a few minutes I realized I just bought the Car I always wanted but couldn't afford.
I'm hooked. This car is a blast to drive. After a couple of months of driving I started
searching the web for car clubs that involved the Impala and came across the NAISSO
site, which I joined, and then I found NJBEASST which I also joined. I used the Impala for
work for 2 years and bought it at the end of the lease.
Now that I don't have to use the Impala as my daily driver for work (company policy says
only 2 years) I began cleaning and restoring and doing minor modifications. Now I enjoy
showing the Impala at our local car shows and hanging around with a great bunch of guys
from NJBEASST that enjoy the Impala as much as I do.
