Installing the Mallory Billet Aluminum Script

Installing the MBA script is not that difficult if you take your time and think it through before you begin. I did a dry run using masking tape before actually  removing the factory script and sticking the new script on the rear quarter panel. If you follow these basic instructions you shouldn't have a problem.

  1.     Place your car on a flat surface preferably level but not necessary. This is important because you will have to take some measurements before you remove the old script. These measurements will serve as reference points when installing the new script so you can locate it the same on both sides.

  2.     After you have taken the measurements on both sides  outline the existing script with masking tape before removing it. This is another guide for installing the MBA script. It will make locating and aligning the new script easier because you will only get one chance to get it straight. Once you remove the backing  tape on the script and press it onto the panel you will not be able to move or remove it with out ruining the tape and/or the script.

  3.     Get a 24" piece of nylon fishing line work it behind the stock script using a up/down sawing motion while pulling it across the panel. Take your time since you don't want to damage the paint or the panel. The script should peel off without a lot of force.

  4.     Once you have removed the script you have to clean off any glue residue using a good quality cleaner. Test the cleaner on hidden painted  surface to make surer it won't damage the paint.  I used GOO-GONE that I purchased at Home Depot . After I removed all the glue residue, I used Auto-Prep by Klean Strip that I purchased at Pep Boys, to remove any grease or wax that may have been on that area of the panel. I then Dries everything with a clean cotton towel.

  5.     Now you should dry fit the MBA script. Using 3/4" masking tape line up the MBA script in the location you've chosen. (The MBA script comes with a clear film over the letters so leave this in place until you have permanently placed the script) If it is in the stock location use the masking tape guides you placed on the panel earlier. Step back and check the placement for location and alignment. If this is satisfactory to you start the permanent installation.

  6.     This is the most important part of the install. Remove the Impala part of the script and peel the backing from tape on the script. Carefully align the bottom of the script with the masking tape guide by placing the bottom edge of the script along the top edge of the guide tape and beginning at the left side vertical guide tape. If you make light contact at the bottom edge of the script you will be able to make adjustments before you press the rest of the script against the panel. You can do this by holding the script at approximately a 30 deg angle to the panel.

  7.     Once you have the alignment correct press the the script against the panel. Rub a smooth cloth over the letters to make sure you have made proper contact.

  8.     Next you want to put the SS part of the script on. These come as separate letters so it is important that you measure their spacing so they are evenly spaced from each other. The 3 sections of the S are held together with a thin spacer. If you are daring you can remove these before you install them but you will have to be extremely careful to get the alignment straight and evenly spaced. I recommend leaving them in place until the script is installed and then snipping them off or painting them with some touch-up paint. If you decide to snip them off be careful not to scratch the paint.

  9.     Repeat steps 1 thru 8 on the other side. Total time for the install is 2 to 3 hours if your careful.

  10.     The finished product should look like this. Now go out and show your new script to your friends.
